Thank you Vanguard and Qube Global Software for your participation in the ACHIEVEability MLK Day of Service project. Monday, January 16th marked the 29th year this nation has formally celebrated the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the third Monday in January.
In accordance with Dr. King’s dream of creating communities rooted in freedom, justice, equality, and peace, in 1994 congress established the MLK federal holiday to be a national day of service. ACHIEVEability honored this day by working with volunteers to help prepare two homes for the arrival of two families into the ACHIEVEability program. This project was part of the Global Citizen’s MLK Day of Service which engaged the efforts of approximately 85,000 people across the greater Philadelphia area. More than 25 volunteers from Vanguard worked diligently alongside volunteers from Qube Global Software, as well as ACHIEVEability parents and children, to ready the two properties. The collaborative effort and coming together of our volunteers, parents and children was an incredible opportunity to honor Dr. King’s life, work and values through collective action that helps strengthen communities.
We would like to thank all of yesterday’s volunteers, as well as Vanguard for their continued support and participation in the past several Global Citizen’s MLK Day of Service, as well as the United Way Day of Caring projects. We are especially grateful for the time energy and effort exhibited by all or yesterday’s volunteers as they continued the work of alleviating poverty that Dr. King spent the last year of his life working so assiduously to rectify. In his book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? Dr. King wrote “There is nothing new about poverty. What is new, however, is that we now have the resources to get rid of it. The time has come for an all-out world war against poverty … Ultimately a great nation is a compassionate nation. No individual or nation can be great if it does not have a concern for ‘the least of these.” Thank you to all our volunteers, donors and participants, all of whom contribute the resources to not only help dispose of poverty, but to also create truly great communities.
