About ACHIEVEability

Thank You PFM Volunteers

On Wednesday, November 8, 2017, nine employees from PFM volunteered their time and energy to help paint and clean the Community Room in the Lawson Residences at the Von Louhr Building. This was the first time employees from PFM have volunteered with ACHIEVEability, and they did not disappoint. The volunteers went above and beyond, successfully painting the space in under four hours.

Support Our Backpack Donation Drive

At ACHIEVEability, we work hard every day to serve the Haddington and Cobbs Creek communities, and to support our families on their journey toward self-sufficiency. We understand that education is the key to success. The 38 parents in our program who earned degrees over the past two years, and their children who stayed in school, are proof that hard work can make a difference!

Backpack4

To continue aiding families in achieving their academic goals, ACHIEVEability provides backpacks filled with school supplies to children in our Family Self-Sufficiency Program and our local West Philadelphia community. Last year, we supported nearly 1,500 children with this drive.

This year, we are aiming to help even more children! Please join us in supporting our youth by making a donation to this drive. All donated backpacks should be new and may include the following supplies: spiral bound notebooks, loose leaf paper, composition books, folders, pens, pencils, highlighters, calculators, pencil sharpeners, glue, erasers, scissors, crayons, etc.

We are asking for all donated backpacks and supplies to be delivered/picked up by Thursday, August 12th. For more information, please contact Brian Hoskins at 215-748-8814 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Faces of Philanthropy

PECO and ACHIEVEability are proud honorees of the 2017 Philadelphia Business Journal Faces of Philanthropy. This recognition honors the most philanthropic initiatives between for-profit companies and nonprofit organizations that truly make a difference in the greater Philadelphia area.

For several years, PECO has served as a strategic partner for ACHIEVEability promoting successful organizational outcomes through the provision of in-kind contributions, sponsorship dollars and many volunteer hours.

Within the last 18 months, PECO has provided the largest sponsorship for the 2016 annual fundraising gala, Food for Thought. PECO's sponsorship contributed to the success of our event and provided invaluable unrestricted funding to support our mission. PECO team member and ACHIEVEability board member, Mary Walker, served as the co-chair of the Food for Thought event committee. The event raised more than $254,000 in gross revenue and hosted over 500 guests. Over six consecutive years, PECO has provided $90,000 in event sponsorships, helping ACHIEVEability raise a grand total of more than $1.5 million in gross revenue. This relationship remains strong for this current year's event. Mary once again is serving as the event co-chair and PECO is committing to the same level of sponsorship.

PECO has provided ACHIEVEability with in-kind support in many ways over the years including making contributions to the Welcome Home Kits, Holiday Gift Drive and Backpack Donation Drive. PECO has been a participant in the Backpack Donation Drive for the last three years, collecting more than 80 backpacks full of school supplies in 2016 alone.

PECO's commitment to ACHIEVEability is not just financial, it's personal. PECO employees have volunteered to prepare two homes for families coming out of shelters. In addition, during the past two years, PECO participated in ACHIEVEability's annual neighborhood clean-up providing more than 40 employee volunteers.

The partnership between ACHIEVEability and PECO has served to help vulnerable families in the Haddington and Cobbs Creek area realize their full potential. PECO believes in our mission to permanently break the cycle of poverty in Philadelphia and actively supports its successful implementation.

Drexel Side-by-Side

Drexel University is hosting a free side-by-side course for residents of West Philadelphia at ACHIEVEability’s offices. This unique course format brings college students and community residents or organizations together in classes taught by distinguished Drexel faculty. The goal of the courses is to create a mutually respectful learning environment where everyone can learn from each other and benefit from the experiences and perspectives of their classmates. We welcome members of our community to join these classes to learn and to share in this active learning model so we may work together to co-create solutions to social problems. There is no cost or education requirements for community students and all materials will be provided. The only requirements are simply registering for the course and making a commitment to attend every class.

ENGL 323: Storytelling Through Mural Arts (Wednesdays from 5:30-8:00PM; April 3, 2017 through June 12, 2017)

Murals tell stories: about neighborhoods and communities, about individuals and their families, and about significant events in our histories. Students will research the context of a series of murals in Philadelphia, explore the process of community and artistic collaboration that produced them, and participate in a guided tour. Please call Special Projects Manager Griffith Ridgway at 215-557-8484 ext. 8826 for more information. Registration is open through March 31, 2017 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Need in Deed

For the first time this year, ACHIEVEability Senior Coach Harold Barrow participated in Need in Deed, an organization connecting the classroom with the community. On Wednesday, February 1, 2016, Harold provided his expertise on homelessness and poverty by speaking to a classroom of more than 30 fifth grade students at General George McCall Elementary School in Philadelphia's Washington Square neighborhood. The students were enthralled by Harold's presentation and said that he was the best speaker they've heard!

Need_in_Deed

Need in Deed works with over 80 public school teachers around Philadelphia, helping to bring real world learning and resources to their students about social issues selected by the students. ACHIEVEability and Harold Barrow are proud to support such a great program and classroom.
