Officer Moses Walker, Jr. Scholarship

The family of slain Officer Moses Walker, Jr. announce their first scholarship recipient.

Ms. Wayne Lipscomb, mother of slain police officer Moses Walker, Jr., and her family selected ACHIEVEability participant Markeeta Blackson-Hackney to become the first recipient of the Officer Moses Walker, Jr. Scholarship. In October 2012, the family of Officer Walker created the scholarship which will benefit deserving single-parent ACHIEVEability participants receiving at least a 3.0 GPA at an accredited Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program. The scholarship fund is in honor of Moses Walker, Jr. who was murdered while leaving duty from the Philadelphia Police Department's 22nd precinct in August 2012. The family selected Markeeta Blackson-Hackney on Moses’ birthday, October 28th.

Markeeta Blackson-Hackney, current Business Management major at Rosemont College, was chosen for her outstanding GPA and progress in the ACHIEVEability program. Markeeta has been a part of the ACHIEVEability community since 2008. She came to the program with her son, Hyneef, and her brother, Roger, from a two bedroom home where nine family members lived. Markeeta has had custody of, and cared for, her brother since their mother died in 2005. Her brother is now a student at the Pennsylvania State University. “Just as Moses was a shining example of hard work and generosity for our family, Markeeta has been so for her family, especially her little brother who has followed her footsteps in pursuing a college education.” says Ms. Lipscomb.
