Officer Moses Walker, Jr. Scholarship Fund

The Officer Moses Walker, Jr. Scholarship Fund was formally announced to the public on Thursday, October 4, 2012.

Phidelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Kevin Bethel and Wayne Lipscomb, mother of recently slain police officer Moses Walker, Jr., made this announcement during a press conference held at the Lawson Residences at Von Louhr, one of ACHIEVEability's newest residences. The scholarship will support ACHIEVEability participants pursuing higher education.

For the first time since the murder of her son, Ms. Lipscomb spoke publicly to a packed room to announce the scholarship.  Guests included community organizations (including United Way of Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey, MOCHA Moms, Mothers in Charge, and CEASEFIREPA), police officers (including officers from Walker’s 22nd Precinct), and elected officials Senator Shirley Kitchen and Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell. Ms. Lipscomb shared stories of her late first-born son and their connection to ACHIEVEability. Wayne entered the ACHIEVEability program in 1999 and also worked in ACHIEVEability’s Community Center. “All I ever wanted was a house with hardwood floors on the odd-number side of the street,” she shared, “and ACHIEVEability made my dream come true.”  Officer Walker also spent time volunteering and working with the local youth at the ACHIEVEability Community Center.

Ms. Lipscomb presented ACHIEVEability CEO Marcus Allen with a $1000 check to kickstart the scholarship fund. The scholarship will be awarded to a deserving single-parent ACHIEVEability participant receiving at least a 3.0 GPA at an accredited Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program.
